This figure illustrates my traffic analysis of PictureTel's Livel AN software (version 2). In this example, I measured n two-way conversation over an Ethernet LAN. A multimedia application such as LiveLAN may overload LAN segments of router buses, but it will not tax router or switch packet forwarding rates. In this example, traffic rates are steady even though the image contained little or no motion; this means that LiveLAN's video compression did not use much interframe compression, a process that transmits the changes between succeeding frames, Video conferencing images usually have relatively Inv motion content in practice. Future Picture Tel releases compatible with H.323 will include motion compression and, as a result, will show much reduced traffic when no image motion or sound is present.
